ADNOC joins forces with Fertiglobe to sell the first cargo of blue ammonia to Japan’s Itochu, for use in fertilizer production.

ADNOC and Fertiglobe harness the potential of ammonia

Fertiglobe, a 58:42 partnership between OCI and ADNOC, will produce blue ammonia at its Fertil plant in Abu Dhabi for delivery to ADNOC customers in Japan.
Blue ammonia, which is more expensive than gray ammonia, is becoming increasingly popular as a low-carbon energy source.
Ammonia can be used as a fuel in a wide range of industrial applications, including transportation, power generation, refining and industries such as iron and steel, wastewater treatment, cement and fertilizer production.
Hydrogen and its fuels, such as blue ammonia andgreen ammonia, are expected to play an important role in Japan’s industrial decarbonization efforts, currently underway in the country.

“We are delighted to leverage the Fertiglobe and ADNOC platforms to help decarbonize our production and our customers’ footprints, while creating shareholder value – a win-win situation all round,” comments Nassef Sawiris, Executive Chairman of OCI N.V. and CEO of Fertiglobe.

ADNOC continues to invest in ammonia

“With the expansion of our capabilities in the blue ammonia value chain, we look forward to strengthening our legacy as one of the world’s least carbon-intensive hydrocarbon producers and supporting industrial decarbonization with a competitive low-carbon product portfolio,” says His Excellency Dr. Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, ADNOC Group CEO.

ADNOC announced in May 2021 that it plans to set up a world-scale blue ammonia production facility at the TA’ZIZ industrial complex in Ruwais, Abu Dhabi.
The final investment decision for the project is expected in 2022, with start-up scheduled for 2025.
In June 2021, Fertiglobe signed an agreement to join this project with a production capacity of 1 million tonnes of ammonia/year.
