Kyon Energy, a developer of large-scale energy storage projects, is to set up a 110 MW and 220 MWh storage system in Helmstedt, Lower Saxony. This project marks a significant step forward in the expansion of energy storage capacity in Germany.

Importance of energy storage systems

Energy storage systems are crucial for efficiently integrating renewable energies into the power grid. They compensate for fluctuations in wind and solar generation, avoid costly power plant adjustments and stabilize the grid. The storage system absorbs excess energy and releases it when needed.

Helmstedt Network Hub

The Helmstedt substation is an important node in the high-voltage network, where several 110 kV lines come together. Thanks to its systemic services, the planned storage system will have a major impact on security of supply and the integration of renewable energies.

Kyon Energy statement

“Large-scale energy storage systems play a decisive role in the energy transition by increasing grid flexibility and enabling the integration of renewable energies. With our new facility in Helmstedt, we are taking an important step in the expansion of energy storage capacities in Germany. We look forward to working together with the town of Helmstedt to advance the energy transition,” said Florian Antwerpen, Managing Director of Kyon Energy.

Energy Transition in Helmstedt

The mayor of Helmstedt, Wittich Schobert, emphasizes that “with this large-scale storage system, a further step is taken to rapidly transform the former lignite mining site into a modern industrial location where renewable energy is generated, stored and converted on a large scale for continuous availability.”
