Project presentation

Kyon Energy, a project development company specializing in large-scale battery storage systems, has received approval to build a new facility in Großenwiehe, Schleswig-Holstein. This facility will have a storage capacity of 20MW and a total capacity of 40MWh, and will be located close to the Schobüll substation. Commissioning of this battery storage system is scheduled for late 2025.

Role of battery storage systems

Battery storage systems, like the one at Großenwiehe, are essential for storing excess energy generated by renewable sources and feeding it back into the power grid when needed. The project will participate in the balancing and wholesale markets, thereby increasing security of supply and network flexibility. This represents a significant contribution to the success of the energy transition. Battery storage projects are proliferating in Germany, as evidenced by the announcement of a project similar to Großenwiehe in the town of Petershagen. RWE, for example, has announced the launch of a new photovoltaic power plant with an integrated storage system.

Comments and local support

Florian Antwerpen, Managing Director of Kyon Energy, underlines the importance of battery storage systems in the growing renewable energy mix. These systems compensate for grid fluctuations in a matter of seconds, preventing overloads and ensuring a reliable, socially responsible electricity supply. The mayor of Großenwiehe, Mr. Keno Jaspers, welcomes the project to his community, which supports the energy transition and local energy self-sufficiency.

Impact and outlook

The integration of this storage system into the distribution network will enable energy fluctuations to be efficiently balanced and the use of renewable energies to be optimized. Kyon Energy is thus sending out a strong signal in favor of sustainable development and the future viability of Germany’s energy supply. The company continues to play a key role in the energy revolution, with an ambitious project pipeline and solid expertise in the development and management of battery storage systems.
By developing multi-use strategies and optimizing storage systems, Kyon Energy is actively contributing to a sustainable, independent energy future.
