The Golden Triangle II solar project, with a capacity of 150 MWac and 50 MW of battery storage, is starting to produce carbon-free electricity. Johan Vanhee, Sales and Purchasing Director at Origis, emphasizes the importance of this project in strengthening Mississippi’s economic competitiveness and supporting the transition to a zero-carbon economy.

“Solar energy strengthens Mississippi’s economic competitiveness, and Origis removes barriers to a cleaner, brighter future by building the region’s clean energy infrastructure.” “Golden Triangle II is the first step in fostering a zero-carbon economy throughout the state, supporting our nation’s economic and energy security goals.”

Expansion of renewable energy projects

Mississippi is home to two otherOrigis renewable projects: Golden Triangle I, a 200 MWac project with 50 MW of battery storage in Lowndes County, and Optimist, a similar project in Clay County. Together, these projects constitute the largest battery storage portfolio under construction in the state, contributing to TVA’s leadership in clean energy generation. When completed in 2025, these projects will provide a total capacity of 550 MW and 150 MW of battery storage, enough to power around 126,000 homes.

Strategic partnerships for the energy transition

Amy Tate, TVA’s Southeast Regional Director, says TVA, working with partners like Origis, is developing carbon-free energy solutions that create jobs and investment in communities. Origis Energy, a leading U.S. provider of renewable energy solutions, develops, builds and operates these projects for TVA. The sites will supply clean energy at competitive rates thanks to PPAs (Power Purchase Agreements) signed between TVA and Origis.

“As a national leader in clean energy, TVA is at the forefront of reducing carbon emissions across all sectors of the economy and providing the clean energy needed to power our region’s growth.” “Together, with partners like Origis, TVA is developing carbon-free energy solutions that create jobs and investment in the communities we serve.”

Supporting sustainability objectives

TVA projects, such as Golden Triangle II, support the operations of large industrial companies like Meta in the TVA region. Meta, which has worked with TVA on more than 1,000 MWac of solar capacity, is delighted to see its first renewable energy project in Mississippi come on stream.

Economic impact and growth opportunities

Following the pandemic, TVA’s affordable, reliable and clean energy, combined with unprecedented migration to the region, stimulated economic growth in the Golden Triangle area. A study by the University of Tennessee predicts 22% population growth in the TVA region by 2050. Origis’ three projects are expected to generate $106 million in short-term economic gains from construction and hiring, as well as $145 million in long-term regional economic benefits.

Cooperation and safety on construction sites

RES, providing construction services to Origis for this portfolio, employs around 500 people across the three projects. Origis Energy Services will manage and maintain the sites once completed, creating around nine jobs on site for the life of the projects. Prevalon Energy, Mitsubishi Power Americas’ new battery energy storage brand, supplies storage systems for each site.

Future prospects

The announcement of the commissioning of Golden Triangle II by Origis Energy and TVA marks an important milestone in the company’s commitment to promoting clean energy solutions. This project supports Mississippi’s economic competitiveness and contributes to a cleaner, brighter future for the region. Origis and TVA continue to develop sustainable energy initiatives to meet the growing demand for clean energy.
