CIP has completed construction of the Changfang-Xidao offshore wind project in Taiwan, increasing the country's offshore wind capacity by 25% and reinforcing its energy transition objectives.

The Changfang-Xidao offshore wind project, recently completed by Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP), represents a breakthrough for Taiwan’s energy transition. With a total capacity of almost 600MW, these offshore wind farms substantially increase Taiwan’ s offshorewind capacity, contributing to its ambitious carbon neutrality goals. Located 11 km off the west coast of Taiwan, the farms use 62 Vestas V174 turbines and jacket foundations supplied by Century Wind Power.

A Major Contribution to Emissions Reduction

The Changfang-Xidao project is expected to generate enough renewable energy to power around 650,000 local homes, with an expected annual reduction of 1.1 million tonnes of CO2. Changfang-Xidao features a high degree of localization, i.e. the use of local suppliers and vendors, marking a first in Taiwan’s offshore wind industry. Christina Grumstrup Sørensen, Senior Partner at CIP, emphasized that the completion of this project is an important milestone for CIP and the offshore wind industry in Taiwan. She emphasized the power of close collaboration between the development team, suppliers, partners and shareholders.

Mads Skovgaard Andersen, Partner at CIP, expressed his gratitude and congratulated the construction team and supply chain partners for their stamina, dedication and problem-solving skills, qualities essential to the success of Changfang-Xidao. The project is majority-owned by CIP’s flagship funds, CI II and CI III, with minority stakes held by Global Power Synergy Public Company, Taiwan Life and Transglobe Life.

Future prospects and developments

CIP has a significant presence in the Asia-Pacific offshore wind market, with a portfolio of 21GW, notably in Korea, Australia and Taiwan. Since entering Taiwan in 2017, CIP has invested significantly in the development of offshore wind projects and the creation of a robust industrial ecosystem. CIP and its partners currently have three offshore wind projects in Taiwan with a combined capacity of around 1,400MW: Changfang-Xidao, Zhongneng (300MW) and Fengmiao (500MW). CIP’s completion of the Changfang-Xidao project marks a crucial step in Taiwan’s energy transition.
