GIGA Storage has announced the launch of its energy storage project, GIGA Giraffe, in the Amsterdam harbor area. With a capacity of 45 MWh, this battery will match the size of the GIGA Buffalo battery in Lelystad, and will be the first four-hour battery in the Netherlands.

Project details

Construction of the GIGA Giraffe battery will start this summer on Westhavenweg and will be connected to the Sextantweg substation in Liander. All the necessary permits for construction are in place, including a connection agreement with Liander, a permit from the municipality, a long-term lease with the Port of Amsterdam, and the project financing is also fully secured.

Use and benefits

The battery will use reserve capacity on the transmission network to prevent transmission restrictions. It will be commissioned in the first quarter of 2025. GIGA Storage points out that there are hundreds of locations in the Netherlands where a battery can support the grid by connecting to a substation. Although the published congestion maps show that the Dutch power grid is almost saturated, GIGA Storage sees the situation differently, arguing that the grid is not optimally utilized for much of the year, so there is still plenty of space available.

Impact on the power grid

The GIGA Giraffe project, with a capacity of 10 MW and 45 MWh, will store energy peaks produced during sunny hours and keep the energy system in balance with a growing share of sustainable but unpredictable energy production. This battery, capable of charging or discharging for four hours, will also be able to participate in the Dutch day-ahead and intraday electricity markets.

Comments from GIGA Storage

Daniela Fahrenkrog, Business Development Manager at GIGA Storage, expressed her enthusiasm for the project, noting that the battery will operate completely independently, giving GIGA Storage the flexibility to participate in various electricity and regulatory markets as required.

With the launch of the GIGA Giraffe project, GIGA Storage is advancing its goal of supporting the energy transition, through innovative energy storage solutions that will contribute to a more efficient use of renewable energy resources.
