TotalEnergies expands operations in Oman for environmentally friendly LNG

TotalEnergies strengthens its presence in Oman with a major project to produce low-carbon LNG, aimed at reducing maritime emissions.

TotalEnergies consolidates its position in Oman through a strategic partnership with the national oil company OQ. Indeed, the company has extended its extraction rights on the Mabrouk North-East gas field until 2050, guaranteeing a stable source of natural gas for decades to come.

Construction of an LNG plant in Sohar

Gas production began in January 2023 and reached full capacity in April 2024. The next phase involves the construction of a natural gas liquefaction plant in Sohar, starting in 2028. The facility will supply LNG to power ships, contributing to a greener supply chain in the strategic Strait of Hormuz region.

Major contract for Technip Energies

Technip Energies has been awarded a major contract for the engineering, procurement and construction of the Sohar liquefaction plant. The contract, valued at between €500 million and €1 billion, underlines the importance and scale of the project.

Sustainable development initiatives

The new LNG facility will be powered by a 300 MW solar farm, currently in advanced discussions for a larger 800 MW project between TotalEnergies and OQ Alternative Energy. TotalEnergies and Technip Energies claim that this plant will be one of the world’s lowest-carbon LNG facilities.

TotalEnergies’ efforts in Oman to develop a green LNG infrastructure mark a significant step towards sustainability in the energy industry. Through strategic partnerships and technological innovations, the company is working towards a less polluting, more responsible future.
