EDF and Nordex step up wind power in South Africa

EDF Renewables and Nordex Group launch wind power projects to move towards a less coal-dependent South Africa, with a capacity of almost 300 MW.

At the end of March 2024, EDF Renewables formalized a major order with the Nordex Group to equip two new wind power projects. Located on the border of the Eastern Cape and Northern Cape provinces in South Africa, these projects, named Umsobomvu and Hartebeesthoek, will each comprise 25 model N163/5.X turbines, with a total capacity of 295 MW.

Construction and technical specifications

“Nordex Group will install the N163/5.X turbines on tubular steel towers with a hub height of 118 meters,” explained Patxi Landa, CSO of Nordex Group. Construction has already begun, and commissioning of the wind farms is scheduled for the first quarter of 2026.

Nordex Group’s Patxi Landa emphasized the importance of their technology in the local context: “We are proud to support EDF Renewables and the Nordex Group. wind power expansion in South AfricaN163 turbines and thus help reduce the country’s dependence on coal.” This highlights not only our environmental commitment but also our support for local economic development.

Sustainability and economy

The projects will not only provide renewable energy, but will also create sustainable jobs and develop technical skills in the Eastern Cape and Northern Cape provinces. In addition, “The Nordex Group will also be responsible for the maintenance and servicing of the turbines for a period of 20 years,” guaranteeing a long-term investment in the region.

The Nordex Group and its global expansion

The Nordex Group, with operations in over 40 markets worldwide, has installed around 50 GW of wind power capacity to date. The group has generated sales of around 6.5 billion euros in 2023. Its plants are located in Germany, Spain, Brazil, India and Mexico, with a product range focused on onshore turbines from 4 to 6 MW+.

The EDF Renewables and Nordex Group initiatives in South Africa are not only a step towards energy self-sufficiency but also a catalyst for the local economy, showing how the wind industry can positively transform energy and economic dynamics.
