In an era marked by an urgent quest for sustainable solutions, the recent memorandum of understanding between Air Liquide and ENEOS Corporation marks a decisive turning point. This strategic partnership aims to catalyze the development of low-carbon hydrogen, a key vector in the race towards carbon neutrality.

A Union of Complementary Skills for Energy Transition

The union of these two Air Liquide-ENEOS companies is based on their complementary skills. On the one hand, ENEOS’ solid presence on the Japanese market and its robust energy infrastructure, and on the other, Air Liquide’s expertise, acquired over more than six decades, covering the entire hydrogen value chain. This expertise includes the production, liquefaction, transport, storage, distribution and various uses of hydrogen, as well as expertise in Carbon Capture, Storage and Utilization (CCUS).

Development of an International Hydrogen Supply Chain

The partnership is committed to embracing the entire low-carbon hydrogen value chain. It will study the development of low-carbon hydrogen production, using CCUS and electrolysis technologies. This is crucial, given the urgency of climate change and the need to develop renewable, less polluting energy sources.

Innovation Initiatives and Hydrogen Mobility in Japan

In addition, particular attention is being paid to the development of an international liquid hydrogen supply chain. The aim is to supply the Japanese market from foreign sources, a move that underlines the importance of international cooperation in the fight against climate change.

Vision of the future and commitment to a low-carbon society

The partnership also extends to hydrogen mobility. Japan, already in the field of hydrogen technology, will see further development of its hydrogen filling station infrastructure, catalyzing the transition to greener modes of transport.
Armelle Levieux, from Air Liquide, and Tomohide Miyata, from ENEOS, underlined the strategic importance of this collaboration. Levieux emphasized the alignment of this partnership with Air Liquide’s strategic plan, ADVANCE, which closely integrates financial and extra-financial performance. Miyata, for his part, emphasized the role of this collaboration in ENEOS’ long-term vision for a low-carbon society and a stable energy supply.

This partnership between Air Liquide and ENEOS represents a significant step towards a low-carbon future. By joining forces, these two leaders are paving the way for new sustainable energy solutions, essential to achieving carbon neutrality.
