A strategic partnership between Eni and Saipem marks a major turning point in the sustainable development of biorefineries.

The world of energy is witnessing a significant breakthrough with the recent alliance between Eni and Saipem. This collaboration aims to radically transform traditional refineries and establish new biorefineries. Giuseppe Ricci, Director of Operations for Energy Evolution at Eni, and Alessandro Puliti, CEO of Saipem, signed this historic agreement, laying the foundations for a promising initiative for the future of energy.

Towards a Decarbonized Future

The main objective of this alliance is to align efforts with global decarbonization targets. The core of this project concerns the research and eventual construction of production sites for biojet, a sustainable aviation fuel, and HVO diesel, a biofuel made from 100% renewable feedstocks in line with the 2018 European “REDII” directive.

HVO Diesel: A Revolution on the Road and Beyond

HVO diesel, marketed under the name HVOlution at Enilive service stations, represents a major step forward. Compatible with road, sea and rail transport, this biofuel stands out for its sustainability and renewable origin.

Ecofining™ Technology at the Heart of Progress

Eni’s proprietary Ecofining™ technology is at the heart of this transformation. It not only enables the development of new biorefineries, but also the conversion of traditional refineries. This technology combines Eni’s technological and operational experience with Saipem’s expertise in the design and construction of these facilities.

An Innovative and Sustainable Heritage

Eni has been involved in converting traditional refineries into biorefineries in Venice, Porto Marghera and Gela, Sicily. These sites process alternative raw materials such as used cooking oil, animal fats, food industry residues and vegetable oils. Saipem has played a crucial role in supporting these projects.
In a drive for continuous innovation, Eni plans to increase its biorefinery capacity from 1.65 million tonnes a year to over 5 million tonnes by 2030.

The strategic alliance between Eni and Saipem ushers in a new era in the energy sector, focused on sustainability and innovation. This collaboration aims to promote the development of biorefineries and decarbonization.
