Britons want more energy independence, according to a new survey of attitudes and concerns about energy. Commissioned by Statkraft, Europe’s leading renewable energy company, the survey reveals the British public’s concern about rising electricity costs.

Inflation in energy prices, particularly electricity, is worrying a majority of the British public. The players involved are mobilizing to provide solutions.

Energy independence, a major challenge in a context of energy price inflation

On a panel of 2,000 British people, 76% were concerned about rising electricity costs. What’s more, 59% of them fear they won’t be able to pay their bills next winter.

In addition to concerns about global warming, the war in Ukraine is making the British public more aware of the importance of energy independence. In fact, 73% of British respondents are concerned about climate change.

In addition, three quarters of consumers are calling for more investment in renewable energy in the UK. The same proportion of respondents expressed frustration with the country’s energy dependence.

As a result, 83% of Britons would like their country to be energy independent.

Note that a majority of the population (88%) is unaware of the measures put in place by the government to achieve carbon neutrality.

The position of the players involved

In April 2022, the UK government is proposing the Energy Security Strategy. This strategy aims to avoid “high fossil fuel prices set by global markets”.

Furthermore, the British public tends to think that renewable energies are more expensive. However, a recent British Onward Report shows that renewable energies can save money on energy bills. What’s more, these types of energy limit price inflation and promote energy independence.

In addition, David Flood, Managing Director of Statkraft UK, states:

“Heating your home and being able to keep the lights on shouldn’t be a luxury. Statkraft’s research highlights that over half (57%) of UK respondents think their bills will have to rise if they switch to clean energy, but this is not the case. By switching to renewables, UK consumers can be protected from market volatility, and household budgets will no longer be dictated by unpredictable, spiraling costs.”

The British are becoming increasingly aware of the importance of energy independence, and are calling for more renewable energies in the country.
