IberBlue Wind, a joint venture between Simply Blue Group, Proes Consultores and FF New Energy Ventures, recently unveiled an ambitious offshore wind energy project off the coast of Granada and Almeria. Known as “La Pinta”, this revolutionary initiative pays tribute to one of Christopher Columbus’ caravels, symbolizing the spirit of exploration and innovation that drives this company. The project aims to harness the region’s abundant wind resources and generate carbon-free energy through advanced offshore floating wind technology.
IberBlue Wind launches La Pinta project: a giant step towards renewable energy
Covering a vast area of approximately 316 square kilometers, La Pinta will house up to 55 wind turbines with an impressive installed capacity of approximately 990 megawatts (MW). Each wind turbine will have a capacity of 18 MW, allowing for significant energy production. To minimize the visual impact, the wind farm will be located between 15 and 35 kilometers from the coast. Once operational, La Pinta has the potential to power more than 670,000 homes, making a significant contribution to the region’s energy needs.
In line with the Spanish government’s vision to achieve 1-3 gigawatts (GW) of installed offshore wind energy by 2030, IberBlue Wind has submitted the Initial Project Document (IPD), detailing the technical specifications for La Pinta, to the Ministry of Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge (MITECO). By using innovative offshore floating wind technology, the project aligns with the government’s commitment to promote sustainable and renewable energy sources.
The realization of La Pinta will require a significant global investment of more than 2,500 million euros. However, this venture will not only have a positive environmental impact, but will also generate significant economic and social benefits for the region. The construction and maintenance of the wind farm is expected to create more than 3,300 jobs, boosting the local economy and providing employment opportunities for coastal communities.
Julio Vera, the director of stakeholder engagement and policy at IberBlue Wind, highlighted the importance of Andalusia as a prime location for offshore wind energy development in Spain. With its abundant wind resources and favorable infrastructure, the region has the potential to become a reference for future offshore wind projects. However, the integration of these wind farms into the existing environment requires the collaboration of various stakeholders, including the Junta de AndalucÃa, city councils, associations and representative bodies of the region. The offshore energy revolution: IberBlue Wind and its projects in Andalusia
La Pinta is the second offshore wind farm that IberBlue Wind is developing in Andalusia. Last November, the joint venture announced the Nao Victoria project in the Alboran Sea, off the coasts of Malaga and Cadiz, with a similar installed capacity of approximately 990 MW. In addition, IberBlue Wind has proposed three other projects: Botafogo, the first offshore wind farm in Portugal off Figueira da Foz, as well as the pioneering cross-border offshore wind projects called Juan Sebastián Elcano and Creoula, located between Spain and Portugal. Together, these projects aim to achieve a combined installed capacity of approximately 1.96 GW.
