New gas discovery offshore Cyprus for TotalEnergies and Eni

French major TotalEnergies and Italian Eni have made a new offshore gas discovery off the coast of Cyprus.

The French major TotalEnergies and the Italian Eni have made a new offshore gas discovery off the coast of Cyprus reinforcing “the promising nature of this area and its development”, according to a statement.

This deposit is located 162 km southwest of the Cypriot coast, in “Block 6” where previous discoveries had already taken place in 2018 and last August.

According to TotalEnergies, “the Zeus-1 well encountered a 105-meter net gas column in carbonate reservoirs, reinforcing the promising nature of this zone and its development.

TotalEnergies holds a 50% interest in Block 6, in which Eni is the operator.

“The new data collected from this well will allow us to evaluate options for rapid development of the discovered resources,” commented Kevin McLachlan, Exploration Director of TotalEnergies, in a statement.

Cyprus dreams of becoming a major energy player after the discovery in recent years of these deposits in the eastern Mediterranean, a subject of additional tension with Turkey.

The island has an exclusive economic zone (EEZ) divided into 12 blocks potentially very rich in gas. TotalEnergies is present in seven of these blocks.
