In Eemshaven in the Netherlands, RWE is erecting three wind turbines with an installed capacity of 7.5MW on the sea wall.

A seaside location

À In Eemshaven, RWE has achieved a world first by installing wind turbines on a sea wall. These constructions are now operational. Katja Wünschel, Managing Director of Renewables in Europe and Australia, says:

“Our three wind turbines on top of a sea wall are a world first. The Oostpolderdijk project illustrates the potential of dikes to play an additional role. In taking this step, we are also aware of our special responsibility to maintain the integrity and safety of the dike, which is our highest priority. With innovative projects like these, we are creating new options for the expansion of renewable energy.”

RWE used a climbing crane for the installation of the upper components, including the Eemshaven. The crane would go up, inserting individual segments as the construction progressed. Finally, the turbines were mounted on CSM (Cutter Soil Mixing) panels.

A showcase construction

In order to realize this assembly, the partners had to reinforce the ground. Indeed, the floor benefit from a mixture of concrete covered with a layer of sand. This technology made it possible to build durable foundations.

This construction method secures the environment by moving the turbines if the sea wall collapses. RWE signed a power purchase agreement with ASML for the supply of electricity. Finally, the three turbines in Eemshaven will supply up to 7,000 Dutch households per year.
