Salzgitter Group signs contract to supply green electricity from EnBW’s He Dreiht offshore wind farm.

A lasting pact

By signing this contract, Salzgitter Flachstahl GmbH secures the supply of 50 megawatts (MW) of green electricity for 15 years. The electricity will be drawn from the 900 MW wind farm located about 90 kilometers north of the island of Borkum. This contract is part of a large project called SALCOS.

It will enable Salzgitter to produce the steel of the future in a clean way. Before such a result can be achieved, it is essential to produce green hydrogen using the wind energy of the He Dreiht wind farm. The Salzgitter Group is working hard to achieve its climate goals by 2035.

Thus, it leads the development process towards a circular economy through partnerships and networks. The signing of this contract brings the company one step closer to becoming production neutral. Gunnar Groebler, CEO of Salzgitter AG states:

“This cooperation with EnBW is a further element of our energy strategy to secure the demand for regeneratively generated electricity for Salzgitter AG and in particular for the SALCOS transformation program. Here, too, we are working with strong partners – true to our mission of ” Partnership for Transformation.”

A reputation that is no longer to be made

Salzgitter is the third partner to establish strong ties with EnBW for its He Dreiht offshore wind farm project. The first PPA was signed almost a year ago with Fraport, which acquired 85MW. Evonik was awarded the largest contract with a green electricity supply of 100MW.

The company is leaving itself until next year to make a final investment decision regarding the construction of the park. In particular, the German steel group has partnered with commercial units to produce renewable energy. Ilsenburger Grobblech GmbH (ILG) supplies it with plates for the onshore and offshore markets of the wind industry.

Finally, the company manufactures other wind energy products such as HFI longitudinally welded steel tubes, precision steel tubes for nacelles and large diameter tubes. Its know-how in product transformation and sustainable innovation has enabled it to achieve a more than positive balance. In fiscal year 2021, the group generated external sales of about 10 billion euros, with a crude steel capacity of 7 million tons.
