In Togo, AMEA Power will develop the expansion of the largest solar power plant in West Africa, the Sheikh Mohamed Bin Zayed plant.

The largest solar power plant in West Africa

In Togo, the Sheikh Mohamed Bin Zayed solar power plant will be expanded from 50 to 70MW. Dubai-based AMEA Power will also add a battery storage system. It will meet the demand for electricity at night.

The project is part of Togo’s National Development Plan, with the goal of providing universal access to electricity by 2030. The project will benefit from debt financing from the Abu Dhabi Export Office (ADEX). Created by the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development (ADFD), it will grant $25 million to the Togolese Ministry of Economy and Finance.

It is part of the financing of the expansion of the complex and the addition of storage batteries. AMEA Technical Services, a subsidiary of AMEA Power, will manage the project in Togo. HE Sani Yaya, Minister of Economy and Finance of Togo, and HE Mohamed Saif Al Suwaidi, Director General of ADFD and Chairman of the ADEX Executive Committee for Exports signed the agreement. Thus, Hussain Al Nowais, President of AMEA Power states:

“This project would not be possible without the support of the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development, the Abu Dhabi Export Board, and the Togolese government. With their support, AMEA Power is able to become a global champion for the UAE and further demonstrate the country’s commitment to the global energy transition.”

Energy independence

AMEA Power announces the expansion of the power plant in Togo. This makes it once again the largest solar photovoltaic plant in West Africa. Located in the village of Blitta, the plant will supply 222,000 homes.

It will also consist of a 4MWh battery energy storage system. In order to extend the availability of clean energy to the electrical grid at night. The plant will aim to support the economic and social development of Togo.
