Iberdrola and Solvay join forces in green energy

Iberdrola and Solvay join forces in a project to supply renewable electricity to Solvay’s plants. According to the agreement, a 172-hectare site will host a photovoltaic plant. A portion of the production will supply Solvay under a 20-year corporate power purchase agreement.

The solar plant, built and operated by Iberdrola, will occupy 77 hectares and will have approximately 100,000 photovoltaic modules. The photovoltaic plant will produce nearly 75 GWh per year and will be operational by the end of 2025. In order to ensure the full integration of the project in its environment, the remaining available surface will benefit from preservation measures.

An ambitious project

It will be one of the largest plants in Europe. In addition, 60% of the electricity produced will be used to power the project’s industrial sites. Solvay’s site for this project includes two rehabilitated settling ponds from its former soda ash plant.

The project is located in the municipalities of Herbitzheim-Willerwald-Sarralbe in the Great East of France. In addition, the project gives a second life to brownfield sites for the production of renewable energy. The project will also contribute to the development of the local economy by stimulating employment in the region.

Companies that develop renewable energy

Iberdrola is an important electricity producer and wishes to develop its renewable electricity production. The company aims to be a strategic partner to businesses by providing customized clean energy solutions. This is how the ETaaS (Energy Transition as a Service) concept was born.

The two companies are therefore aiming to develop their renewable energy. In this case, the solar photovoltaic system and the power purchase agreement are part of Iberdrola’s “Energy Transition as a Service” product portfolio. While Solvay has committed itself to carbon neutrality in its Solvay One Planet.
