GE Renewable Energy will participate in the Fukaura wind farm developed by Green Power Investment in Japan. This project is in line with the Japanese objectives. In order to reach Net Zero by 2050, the country intends to develop renewable energies. GE will supply 19 turbines for a total installed capacity of 79.8 MW.

GE and GPI partner to develop Fukaura

GPI selects GE Renewable Energy as supplier for Fukaura wind farm. The wind farm is GE’s third project with GPI in Japan. It will include 19 GE 4.2-117 onshore wind units.

The agreement also includes a full 10-year service contract with an optional extension. Tohoku Electric Power is supporting the project as a strategic partner of GPI projects in the Tohoku region. The wind farm will operate 4.2 MW onshore wind turbines.

Installation of the wind turbines at the project site will begin in the second quarter of 2023. In fact, the wind turbines will be fully operational in 2024. In addition, the proximity of the northwestern maritime border of Japan requires minimizing the environmental consequences.

They will also have to deal with the extreme weather conditions and unique wind environment of Japan. According to the IEA, Japan’s onshore wind capacity is 5.3 GW. The government estimates the growth potential of onshore wind by 2030 at 15-16 GW.

Two major companies in the sector

GE Renewable Energy is part of GE Vernova, GE’s $16 billion portfolio of energy businesses. The company combines onshore and offshore wind, hydro and storage. It also includes a part of solar energy and grid solutions.

This has enabled GE to install more than 400 GW of clean renewable energy. The company equips more than 90% of the world’s utilities with network solutions. Nearly 40,000 employees work in more than 80 countries.

The Fukaura wind farm also involves Green Power Investment Corporation. A company specialized in the operation, construction and development of renewable energy since its creation in 2004. In addition, the company has been a subsidiary of Pattern Energy Group LP since 2015.

GPI is developing the construction of the Ishikariwan shinko offshore wind project (112 MW), which will be commissioned in 2023. This is the main offshore wind project in Japan. Wind Farm Tsugaru (121 MW), the largest wind farm in Japan, will start operation in spring 2020.
