Renewable energy expansion: RWE Clean Energy invests in new projects in Virginia.

Solar energy will be supplied by seven projects, two of which are in operation, one under construction and four in development. These seven solar projects in the state total over 300 megawatts (MW) capable of producing over 750,000 megawatt-hours of output.

As part of its commitment to carbon neutrality, Dominion Energy plans to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.

“We are invigorated by our ability to help Dominion move forward with a series of projects in its home state of Virginia that reduce its carbon footprint and help the industry move closer to carbon neutrality.”

“As a company, we are well placed to leverage our extensive experience to deliver the highest quality, cost-optimized solar energy projects, while offering tailored solutions to our customers,” said Mark Noyes, CEO of RWE Clean Energy, a subsidiary of RWE AG.

The utility-scale project portfolio includes :

  • Pleasant Hill Solar: a 20 MW project located in Suffolk, Virginia, which went into service in April.
  • Watlington Solar: a 20 MW project in Halifax County, Virginia, commissioned in June.
  • Wythe County Solar: 75 MW project located in Wythe County, Virginia, currently under construction and scheduled for commissioning in 2024.
  • Switchgrass Solar: 69 MW project located in Suffolk County, VA, currently under development.
  • 360 Solar: a 52 MW project in Chesterfield County, Virginia, currently under development.

Dominion Energy Virginia commits to carbon-free power projects with RWE Clean Energy.

These projects will contribute to Virginia’s diverse energy landscape and help support a reliable energy grid. Enabling Dominion Energy Virginia to maximize the benefits of carbon-free power generation, while reducing costs for ratepayers. Each project has a PPA (power purchase agreement) in place with Dominion Energy Virginia, the regulated utility company supplying electricity to over 2.8 million customers in the state.

RWE Clean Energy will be the long-term owner-operator of each project. Another project, RWE Clean Energy’s Water Strider Solar, an 80 MW project in Halifax County, Virginia, also has a PPA with Dominion Energy Virginia and entered service in the second quarter of 2021.

In addition to these utility-scale projects, RWE Clean Energy owns eight other Distributed Energy Resources (DER) PPAs for 24 MW, also contracted to Dominion Energy Virginia. Together, this portfolio of projects has the capacity to power over 70,000 homes in the Old Federal State.

RWE Clean Energy operates a renewable energy portfolio with an installed capacity of around 8 gigawatts, making it the fourth-largest renewable energy company in the USA, and the second-largest owner and operator of solar power in the country. RWE Clean Energy’s strong position in renewable energy is the result of the combination of RWE Renewables Americas with Con Edison Clean Energy Businesses, acquired by RWE in March 2023.
