Boralex has received ministerial approval for the extension of its Clashindarroch wind farm near Dufftown, in Moray, Scotland. The project includes up to 21 wind turbines and a 50-megawatt battery storage system, bringing total capacity to 189 megawatts. It forms part of the company’s 2030 strategy to strengthen its presence in the United Kingdom.
The new development will be located west of the existing Clashindarroch wind farm. The project was designed following environmental and landscape studies and will cover approximately 882 hectares of upland heather moor. The company plans long-term environmental management measures, including biodiversity enhancement efforts.
Economic measures targeting Moray communities
The extension is accompanied by a set of economic and social measures for local communities. A community fund of up to £693,000 per year (approximately $873,000) will be provided over the project’s expected 40-year lifespan. Part of this amount will be used to support household energy bills within 5 kilometres of the turbines, with an annual payment of £1,849 ($2,330) and a one-time grant of up to £20,000 ($25,200) for energy efficiency improvements.
Boralex will also implement a scholarship fund worth £45,000 per year ($56,700), financing 15 scholarships in science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and construction skills, specifically targeting students from the Moray region.
Targeted support for local economic development
In parallel, a socio-economic fund of up to £138,000 per year ($173,400) will be administered by Moray Council. It will support initiatives such as supply chain development, business support, and community wealth building. According to official documents, the use of these funds will be discussed with local stakeholders.
Boralex states the project aligns with a long-term investment approach in Scotland. The company has already committed £29.5mn ($37.1mn) to its first Scottish project, Limekiln wind farm, with £8.4mn ($10.6mn) spent locally in Caithness.
Reinforcing the company’s UK deployment strategy
Ministerial approval of the Clashindarroch project strengthens Boralex’s strategic position in the UK market. The company highlights its capacity to deliver large-scale projects that meet national energy needs while generating local benefits.
The site was selected for its energy production potential and favourable topographic conditions. Regulatory procedures were followed to ensure the project complies with landscape and wildlife impact requirements.
