Sustainable Holdings has announced the construction of its first grid-scale battery energy storage system, with a capacity of 2MW/8.3MWh. The facility is located in Matsusaka, Mie Prefecture, within the area operated by Chubu Electric Power Transmission and Distribution. The company expects trial operations to begin in February 2026, with full commercial operation set for June of the same year.
Integration into electricity markets
Once operational, the facility will participate in the wholesale, balancing and capacity markets. No details have been disclosed regarding the appointment of an aggregator to manage the asset in those markets. The project will use twenty cabinet-type battery units, each with a capacity of 417kWh, sold under the Sustainable Holdings brand.
A first investment in grid-scale storage
This initiative marks the company’s entry into grid-scale energy storage. Active in the renewable energy sector since 2011, Sustainable Holdings has already developed over 100MW of solar projects across Japan’s nine main transmission operator zones. This new development reflects a diversification towards complementary energy infrastructure.
A diversified project portfolio
Beyond the energy sector, Sustainable Holdings is also involved in the development of atmospheric water generators and the operation of glamping resorts. No financial details have been disclosed at this stage regarding the cost of the Matsusaka project or its funding sources. However, the company has indicated plans to continue investing in large-scale storage.
