CMA CGM has announced the registration under the French flag of ten new container ships with a capacity of 24,212 TEU (twenty-foot equivalent units). These vessels, among the largest in the world, will be powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG), a technology that is more environmentally friendly compared to traditional fossil fuels. They will be put into service progressively starting in 2026 and will operate on the Asia-Northern Europe route, mainly serving the French ports of Le Havre and Dunkirk.
Strategic Choice for France
CMA CGM’s decision to place these ships under the French flag is part of a strategic approach aimed at strengthening the competitiveness of the national fleet in an increasingly competitive global maritime industry. These vessels will be registered under the French International Register (RIF), ensuring compliance with French safety standards and labor conditions. This decision also allows CMA CGM to further consolidate its presence in France, both economically and logistically.
Energy Transition and Innovation
By opting for LNG-powered vessels, CMA CGM is continuing its efforts to reduce the carbon footprint of its maritime operations. LNG is an alternative fuel that reduces CO2 emissions by up to 30% compared to traditional fuels. Additionally, these ships are compatible with low-carbon fuels such as biomethane and e-methane, which can achieve even greater reductions in CO2 emissions, as well as air pollutants such as nitrogen oxides and fine particulate matter.
CMA CGM’s commitment to this energy transition is part of a broader movement aimed at modernizing the maritime transport sector, which faces increasing international environmental regulations.
Impact on Local Employment and Training
The deployment of these container ships under the French flag will also create new local jobs. CMA CGM plans to recruit 135 French sailors, who will be trained, in part, at the French National Maritime Academy (École Nationale Supérieure Maritime). This initiative aims to support employment in the maritime sector while strengthening the local skills necessary to operate these large vessels. The company also expects indirect economic benefits for the shipbuilding sector and French suppliers involved in the ships’ construction.
Strengthening the Strategic Role of the French Maritime Sector
Through this initiative, CMA CGM is contributing to the strengthening of France’s strategic position in the global maritime sector. France, the world’s second-largest maritime zone, boasts an excellent maritime industry that includes shipowners, ports, shipyards, and suppliers. The registration of these ships under the French flag is not merely a symbolic gesture but an asset for France’s maritime and industrial sovereignty, particularly in times of global geopolitical and economic tensions.
