MCF Energy Ltd. announced it has reached the final depth of 3,310 metres on the Kinsau-1A well, located in the Lech region of Germany. The project is operated by its wholly owned subsidiary, Genexco GmbH, which holds a direct 20% interest in the strategic well. This drilling marks a key milestone in the Canadian company’s European operations, which are focused on onshore gas potential in Germany.

Hydrocarbons identified in the Purbeck and Malm formations

The well first reached the Jurassic Purbeck carbonate formation on September 10. This section, identified at the expected depth using recovered samples, showed significant hydrocarbon indications, with visible oil on drilling mud. Drilling then continued into the Malm formation, the well’s second target, which had previously demonstrated oil productivity during Mobil’s 1983 drilling of the Kinsau-2 well.

Drilling progressed at a rate between seven and fifteen metres per hour. Preliminary observations indicate a structural elevation of four to six metres compared to the Mobil Kinsau-1 well, potentially indicating a more favourable reservoir. Logging operations are currently underway to confirm geological structures and refine data interpretation.

Reassessment of a previously tested site drilled by Mobil

The Kinsau-1A well is a redevelopment of the original Kinsau-1 well, drilled in 1983, where Mobil recorded test results of over 24 mn cubic feet of gas per day. The historic test recovered 45.9 mn cubic feet of gas and 1,510 barrels of condensate. While not necessarily indicative of long-term performance, these results prompted MCF Energy to resume operations at the site.

Reinterpretation of geological data will be finalised once well logs are completed. James Hill, Chief Executive Officer of MCF Energy, confirmed onsite that both geological targets were reached at the expected depths, further strengthening the company’s position in the German gas sector.
