Elmya Energy and Atlantica Sustainable Infrastructure Ltd have announced the formation of a joint venture named Elmantic, with the goal of developing 4 GW of large-scale renewable energy projects in the United States. This initiative brings together the North American teams of both groups, who will lead all project development activities across the country.
Founded in 1966 as an electrical installation company, Elmya Energy is now a Spanish renewable energy firm with more than 3 GW of connected projects worldwide. Atlantica Sustainable Infrastructure Ltd manages a portfolio of assets in renewable energy, storage, high-efficiency natural gas, and transmission across North America, Europe, and South America.
Targeted rollout in ERCOT and WECC markets
Elmantic will focus its activities on greenfield development in areas served by the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) and the Western Electricity Coordinating Council (WECC), two of the largest electricity markets in the United States. According to project leaders, this strategy aims to address rising energy demand through competitive and quickly deployable projects.
Elmya’s U.S. team, based in Richmond, Virginia and Austin, Texas, plans to recruit new members to support the venture’s growth. The company highlights its data-driven site selection methodology and in-house project execution expertise as key strengths in securing operations for the joint venture.
Strategy focused on execution speed
Carlos Piñar, Managing Director of Elmya, stated the strategic importance of the North American market, noting that the launch of Elmantic comes at a favourable moment for energy sector growth. He highlighted the combined experience of Colin Mott, Manuel RodrÃguez DÃaz, and Mak Nagle to lead development operations.
Colin Mott, Head of North America at Elmya Energy USA, said the company’s priority is to build collaborative projects with landowners and local communities. He also noted that changes in interconnection queues could create new opportunities, adding that fast commissioning remains a key competitive advantage.
