Romanian electricity supplier Electrica has reached a significant milestone by issuing Romania’s first corporate green bond. The company raised €500 million in a deal marked by strong investor demand, which exceeded the final offer by more than ten times. Among the buyers was the European Investment Bank (EIB), a key player in sustainable financing. This issuance is listed on both the Luxembourg and Bucharest stock exchanges.

The funds raised will be used to strengthen Electrica’s renewable electricity generation and energy storage capabilities. The company aims to reach a capacity of 1,000 megawatts of renewable energy production and store 900 megawatt-hours (MWh) of electricity by 2030. These projects are part of Electrica’s Green Financing Framework, a programme that supports the company’s sustainability commitment.

A significant issuance for Romania

The green bond issuance by Electrica is seen as a turning point for the Romanian financial market, with both national and international implications. Ioannis Tsakiris, Vice-President of the EIB, highlighted that this operation symbolises the convergence of finance and sustainability. “This operation is a breakthrough for the Romanian market,” he commented, emphasising the importance of directing funds towards environmentally sustainable projects to stimulate economic growth while supporting the fight against climate change.

Strong ambitions for the future

Electrica’s CEO, Alexandru Chiriță, praised the success of this issuance, stating that it marks a pivotal moment for the company and the national energy system. “The success of this operation demonstrates our corporate discipline, transparency, and ability to execute swiftly, while sending a strong signal to international financial markets about Romania’s potential in sustainable financing,” he said.

Electrica’s green bond has a five-year maturity, an interest rate of 4.566%, and a BBB rating from Fitch Ratings. This issuance was approved on 10 July 2025 by the Commission de Surveillance du Secteur Financier in Luxembourg.
