AMEA Power commissions Egypt’s first large-scale battery energy storage system

AMEA Power has commissioned a 300 MWh battery energy storage system in Egypt, a first for the country, extending the Aswan solar site’s activity and consolidating its presence in the African market.

Dubai-based AMEA Power Group has announced the commissioning of Egypt’s first industrial-scale Battery Energy Storage System (BESS). This 300 MWh facility, linked to the 500 MW Aswan photovoltaic solar plant, was delivered ahead of the scheduled commercial operation date. This milestone follows the project’s financial close, underlining AMEA Power’s ability to deliver large-scale energy infrastructure across the African continent.

An integrated site for storage and solar production

The battery storage system is connected to the photovoltaic plant, which has been operational since December 2024 and is now the country’s largest single-site solar installation. Powered entirely by solar energy, the BESS is designed to enhance national grid stability and secure electricity supply as demand rises. The project meets the objectives of Egypt’s national energy plan, the “Egypt Integrated Sustainable Energy Strategy 2035”, by supporting the integration of renewable sources into the existing grid.

According to AMEA Power, this infrastructure supports the government’s strategy to increase the share of renewables in the national power mix. Hussain Al Nowais, Chairman of AMEA Power, stated, “We are proud to bring this landmark project online, strengthening Egypt’s grid resilience and supporting the country’s energy ambitions,” as cited by AMEA Power on July 15.

International financing and a regional first

The project received funding from the International Finance Corporation (IFC), a subsidiary of the World Bank Group, marking AMEA Power’s first large-scale storage project in North Africa. This financial partnership highlights the role of international institutions in developing energy solutions in Africa, where supply security remains a priority for many governments.

The commissioning of this facility reinforces AMEA Power’s strategy to expand operations in Africa and the Middle East. The company continues to develop in the storage sector, combining solar production and storage solutions to offer a comprehensive service to national power operators. According to AMEA Power, the Aswan project is now considered a benchmark for the regional energy sector.
