Matrix Renewables signs 22 MW energy storage contract in California

Matrix Renewables and Pioneer Community Energy have signed an energy capacity contract for a 22 MW battery storage project in Kern County, operational from early 2026.

Matrix Renewables, a global renewable energy platform backed by TPG Rise, announced the signing of an energy capacity contract with Pioneer Community Energy, a non-profit electricity provider based in Rocklin, California, for a battery energy storage project. The contract, known as a “Resource Adequacy capacity contract”, covers a total capacity of 22 MW from the Alamo Battery Energy Storage project located in Kern County, California, United States.

Strategic development in California

The Alamo project is expected to enter commercial service in the first half of 2026. It is part of Matrix Renewables’ overall strategy to increase its energy storage capabilities throughout the United States. Currently, the company is developing more than one gigawatt (GW) of similar projects in the state of California.

According to Chris Matthew, Chief Commercial Officer at Matrix Renewables, “this agreement represents another step in expanding our energy storage presence in California”. He added that “this investment reflects our confidence in the state’s clean energy future and the essential role of energy storage in making it a reality”.

Regional economic impact and grid reliability

The Alamo project is also expected to support local economic development in Kern County, as highlighted by Cindy Tindell, Managing Director and Head of U.S. for Matrix Renewables: “Matrix is committed to building strong, long-term relationships with the communities where we operate”.

For its part, Pioneer Community Energy expressed satisfaction with the partnership established with Matrix Renewables, stating that it will secure the clean energy supply necessary to enhance the reliability of California’s power grid. Greg Janda, Vice Chair of Pioneer Community Energy’s Board of Directors and Rocklin City Councilmember, stated that “this contract will ensure sufficient energy supplies while offering competitive prices to our customers”.

National and international expansion of Matrix Renewables

In the United States, Matrix Renewables currently has a portfolio exceeding 8.9 GW of renewable energy and battery storage projects in operation and under development. These projects cover five distinct regional markets: the California Independent System Operator (CAISO), the Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO), the Southwest Power Pool (SPP), the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT), and the Western Electricity Coordinating Council (WECC).

Globally, Matrix Renewables is developing a portfolio of over 15.5 GW, including solar, battery storage, and green hydrogen production projects distributed across several regions worldwide.

The Arkansas Oil and Gas Commission validated integration of the Reynolds Brine Unit after unitizing 20,854 acres and adopting a 2.5% lithium royalty. The project targets 22,500 tonnes per year of battery-grade lithium carbonate from 2028 via a 55:45 joint venture.
