The UK energy sector is moving towards a low-carbon future with Statera Energy’s recent approval for a 400 MW battery energy storage system (BESS) at Chickerell in Dorset.
The project is designed for up to six hours’ storage and is strategically located close to a National Grid substation, enabling instant distribution of stored energy.

An ambitious project for energy transition

This project represents the largest energy storage system approved by Statera to date, underlining the company’s commitment to developing essential infrastructure to balance the grid.
Operating alongside other long-life and flexible energy storage technologies, the facility will contribute to the UK government’s goal of decarbonizing the electricity grid by 2030. The importance of increasing BESS capacity close to existing substations cannot be underestimated.
This will enable power to be supplied on demand during periods of intermittent generation from renewable sources such as solar and wind, enhancing the flexibility and resilience of the grid.

Compliance and Community Commitment

The project is being developed in accordance with the National Planning Policy Framework and local policies in West Dorset, Weymouth and Portland.
In addition, 21 hectares of the 30-hectare site will be transformed into a community park, promoting a net gain in biodiversity.
Views towards the Dorset Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty will be preserved through tree and hedgerow planting.
Statera Energy is also working closely with Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service to ensure that the necessary safety standards are met.
A framework for liaison with the fire department is being put in place as part of the planning process.
Cooling systems and automatic fire suppression systems are integrated to keep batteries at a safe temperature and prevent fires.
