Sungrow to equip ENGIE’s Vilvoorde 800MWh BESS project in Belgium

Sungrow will supply its PowerTitan energy storage systems for the 800MWh Vilvoorde project in Belgium, run by ENGIE.

Sungrow, a global supplier of energy storage systems, has been chosen to equip ENGIE’s 800MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project in Vilvoorde, Belgium. This project, which will be one of the largest in Europe with a capacity of 200MW/800MWh, aims to be connected to the grid in 2025.
The project will supply electricity to around 96,000 households, and will mark Sungrow’ s first supply of BESS in Belgium. Sungrow will deliver 320 units of its PowerTitan energy storage system, whose compact design and pre-assembled delivery will cut on-site installation time by 50%. The Chinese company continues to expand in Europe, as illustrated by its energy storage project with Nofar Energy in Germany.

PowerTitan technical specifications

The PowerTitan uses liquid-cooling technology, enabling efficient management of battery temperatures with a maximum difference of two and a half degrees Celsius. This system optimizes investment (CAPEX) and operating (OPEX) costs, while guaranteeing extended battery life. These features make the PowerTitan an ideal solution for large-scale energy storage facilities.
According to Dr. James Li, ESS Europe Director at Sungrow, “this storage project is one of the first of its size in continental Europe, underlining the growing importance of energy storage in the energy transition.”

Deployment and growth prospects

In 2023, Sungrow delivered over 10.5GWh of PowerTitan solutions worldwide, strengthening its position in the utility-scale storage market. This worldwide success testifies to the efficiency and reliability of Sungrow’s solutions.
The Vilvoorde project represents a significant step forward for ENGIE and Sungrow, demonstrating their ability to take on large-scale projects. This collaboration could set new standards for future large-scale energy storage projects.
