Yara participates in the HyPilot Project

Yara joins the HyPilot project. This demonstrator could play a key role in reducing the cost of renewable hydrogen.

Yara Clean Ammonia joins the HyPilot project. For example, the company is testing Hystar’s PEM electrolyser technology. It will be used for the production of green ammonia, and offers a better efficiency.

In fact, its electrolysers offer a thinner membrane. This allows for a better yield. This project is a crucial step for the development of renewable hydrogen production.

Yara joins HyPilot

HyPilot will see the first field test of the 1 MW containerized electrolyser developed by Hystar. It will be commissioned in the second quarter of 2023 at a gas processing plant operated by Gassco in Rogaland, Norway.

HyPilot will allow the testing of Hystar’s electrolyser under realistic field conditions. It will operate for 10,000 hours. The data collected will allow us to verify its proper functioning.

Yara, a fertilizer producer, is particularly interested in using hydrogen for the production of green ammonia. Thus, by participating in the project, Yara intends to evaluate Hystar’s electrolysers. These could then reduce the cost of producing renewable hydrogen on an industrial scale.

Lise Winther, SVP Upstream Projects & Technologies at Yara Clean Ammonia, comments:

“We look forward to working with Hystar and studying the results of the 1 MW pilot electrolyzer project, and the knowledge gained from the HyPilot project will be a valuable input to our work in developing green ammonia for fertilizer, deep-sea shipping and power generation.”

In addition, HyPilot will demonstrate dynamic hydrogen production adapted to the variable production linked to wind energy. Equinor will be in charge of this one.

HyPilot, a key project for the energy transition

The HyPilot project is crucial for the energy transition and the development of renewable hydrogen in Europe. In fact, the IEA estimates that the cost of producing renewable hydrogen will drop by 30% by 2030. This will favour the development of a European subsidiary.

Fredrik Mowill, CEO of Hystar, states:

“HyPilot marks an important moment for the hydrogen industry, bringing together leading industry names to showcase Hystar’s patented, ultra-efficient electrolyzers. Today’s announcement is a key step toward the scaling up and large-scale commercial deployment of renewable hydrogen production.”

Also, he is happy to welcome Yara. Working with companies like Yara will really help develop the renewable hydrogen sector in Europe.

1.9 trillion dollars needed for hydrogen in the U.S.

According to a recent study by the National Petroleum Council (NPC), a $1.9 trillion investment in hydrogen is essential if the United States is to meet its carbon neutrality targets by 2050. This is three times the amount currently planned.
