Complementary expertise

Utsira Nord is the consortium of companies’ project to further develop floating wind energy in Norway in 2023. The partnership with Aker Solutions aims to further develop the capabilities of the Norwegian supply chain. In addition, it aims to strengthen Norway’s competitiveness in the field of floating wind power.

This MOU builds on Mainstream’s offshore wind experience in the North Sea. Thus, Ocean Winds will bring its expertise in the development, construction and operation of wind farms. Finally, Statkraft will develop its expertise in the operation and management of renewable energy.

Thus, the consortium covers the entire value chain, from development to market launch of clean offshore energy. Aker Solutions is a service provider for the energy industry with expertise in Norway. Tove Røskaft, Head of Offshore Wind at Mainstream, states:

“The offshore wind journey is just beginning in Norway and innovative collaboration models are needed to ensure that we position Norway competitively in offshore wind. We believe that combining the strengths of the entire Aker Group, along with our partners Ocean Winds and Statkraft, will position Utsira Nord at the forefront of the floating wind industry globally, while bringing broad benefits to Norway through new jobs, new technology and new green energy.”

A strategic location

For the consortium, developing Utsira Nord demonstrates a commitment to using Norwegian expertise and advancing the supply chain. For Aker Solutions, floating offshore wind energy is an industrial opportunity. However, the consortium has the experience, innovation and competitive models.

North Utsira is an area off Haugesund in western Norway. Thus, the location benefits constantly strong winds. Offshore wind is a rapidly maturing renewable energy technology that will play an important role in the future energy system.

Stephen Bull, EVP Renewables, Aker Solutions, said:

“We are excited to build a partnership focused solely on advancing the next chapter of Norway’s energy legacy, while contributing to the government’s 2050 net zero goal.”

The consortium is looking forward to working with Norwegian partners and suppliers. The industrial role for offshore wind in the North Sea is to be continued and Norway is a crucial market.
