HDF Energy (Hydrogène de France), developer of large-scale hydrogen infrastructures, is collaborating with the Tunisian Ministry of Industry, Mines and Energy.
This partnership is the concrete expression of a green hydrogen production project in Tunisia, with an initial investment of 3 billion euros, designed to serve the European and local markets.

National Strategy and Natural Resources

Tunisia aims to become a leader in green hydrogen production, using its abundant solar and wind energy resources.
The project calls for the construction of 1 GW of wind power capacity, 500 MW of photovoltaic power and 800 MW of electrolysers, enabling the production of up to 65,000 tonnes of hydrogen per year.
Much of this production will be exported to Europe via the SoutH2 corridor, an initiative spearheaded by European gas transmission operators.

Local Involvement and Economic Impact

The project involves local investors and Tunisian communities, as well as the country’s industrial fabric, which is rich in players in the renewable energy and gas sectors.
This collaboration demonstrates HDF Energy’s expertise in the development of large-scale hydrogen infrastructures, and marks a significant step forward in energy transition initiatives.
The signing of this protocol is part of a series of agreements signed by the Tunisian Ministry with HDF Energy and five other foreign companies.
These agreements aim to implement the national strategy for green hydrogen and its derivatives by 2050, by attracting investment and exploiting existing national resources and infrastructure.
Tunisia plans to produce 8.3 million tonnes of green hydrogen and its derivatives by 2050, including 2.3 million tonnes for the local market and 6 million tonnes for export, representing total investments of 120 billion euros.

Statements and outlook

Gilles Bouder, Director for the EMEA region at HDF Energy, emphasizes that this agreement reinforces HDF Energy’s status as a global expert in the green hydrogen sector.
“Our aim is to carry out a genuine Tunisian project, drawing on local skills, to produce some of the most competitive green hydrogen in the world.”

HDF Energy: World leader

HDF Energy is a leading global player in the hydrogen sector, manufacturing high-power fuel cells and developing hydrogen infrastructures.
These fuel cells produce electricity from hydrogen to decarbonize the power generation sector and the heavy maritime and rail mobility sectors.
They will be manufactured from 2025 at the HDF Energy plant near Bordeaux.
HDF Energy’s Renewstable® power plants produce stable renewable electricity, thanks to a combination of intermittent renewable energy sources and green hydrogen storage.
HDF Energy is also developing large-scale decarbonated hydrogen production infrastructures, with a project portfolio worth over 5 billion euros.
With over 150 experts and a presence in several regions of the world, HDF Energy continues to grow, particularly since its IPO on Euronext Paris in 2021.
This ambitious green hydrogen production project in Tunisia represents a major step forward for the country, which aims to become a world leader in this field.
The collaboration between HDF Energy and the Tunisian Ministry of Energy underlines the importance of international partnerships to accelerate the global energy transition.
