Terna Energy is to develop a renewable electricity generation and storage plant on the island of Agios Efstratios in Greece. The company is partnering with CRES for this operation following a collaboration agreement signed at the end of March 2021.

Terna Energy brings green energy to the island of Agios Efstratios

Collaboration agreement with CRES

“It is with great pleasure that we have signed the agreement to make Agios Efstratios a green island. It’s a project that introduces new technologies to the country. It will effectively combine the production of green energy with its storage and use,” said Terna Energy’s CEO.

As part of the “Hybrid system for electricity and heat production from RES on the island of Agios Efstratios” project, Terna Energy has just signed a collaboration agreement with the Center for Renewable Sources and Energy Savings (CRES). The aim is to develop a hybrid power plant for the use and storage of electricity generated from renewable energies.

A hybrid storage-generation power plant

The plant will comprise a wind turbine, a photovoltaic station, storage batteries and an energy management and control system.

An integrated district heating system for the Ai Stratis community is also included. It will be equipped with central heat production and storage units.

85% renewable energy for the island’s needs

The aim is to achieve 85% or more penetration of renewable energy sources in the island’s electricity system. As a result, the island community’s heat and hot water needs will be met to the full.

The company has agreed to design, install and commission the hybrid plant. It will also operate and maintain the project for twelve years.
