Siemens Gamesa and Doosan Enerbility announce the signing of a binding framework agreement for a strategic partnership for the South Korean offshore wind market. Marc Becker, CEO of Siemens Gamesa’s offshore business, and Hongook Park, CEO of Doosan Enerbility’s Power Service business group, represented the parties at the signing ceremony for the framework partnership agreement held in Hamburg, Germany.

The framework agreement covers three areas

This agreement follows the successful exploration of potential cooperation made possible by a Memorandum of Understanding signed in June 2022. This next step lays the foundation for a strong local content offering in the South Korean offshore wind market in the future. The implementation of the scope of the partnership is conditional on the success of orders for offshore wind turbines on the South Korean market.

The framework agreement covers three areas of technology exchange in which the two companies will work closely together in South Korea. Doosan will assemble nacelles for Siemens Gamesa offshore wind turbines at a Doosan facility currently in the design phase, undertake turbine assembly for Siemens Gamesa machines at intermediate ports as well as offshore construction of projects using Siemens Gamesa machines, and provide offshore service for certain orders involving Siemens Gamesa machines.

The advantages for South Korea

The alliance between the companies strengthens Korea’s burgeoning offshore wind industry. Benefits include efficient and environmentally friendly local assembly and local job creation to serve the South Korean offshore wind market.

The agreement involves Siemens Gamesa offering its offshore Direct Drive technology to Doosan, as well as Doosan’s deep knowledge of the Korean market. Both companies aim to promote the growth of local jobs and foreign investment, while providing a clean, green source of energy.

Hongook Park, CEO of Doosan Enerbility’s Power Services Business Group, said, “We want to cooperate to expand our participation in the Korean offshore wind power market and actively pursue the promotion of the domestic offshore wind power ecosystem.” Furthermore, Park added that with this partnership, Doosan hopes to strengthen its competitiveness in the renewable energy sector through measures such as improving existing products and diversifying models.

Doosan Enerbility has been a major player in the South Korean market since 2005 with its offshore wind projects such as Southwest Offshore Wind Power (60 MW). Thanks to this historic partnership between Siemens Gamesa and Doosan Enerbility, the prospects are bright for a sustainable future based on renewable sources in South Korea.
