Strata Clean Energy has signed a 20-year energy storage contract with Arizona Public Service (APS) for the Justice Energy Storage project, located near Skyline Regional Park in Phoenix, Arizona. The 150 MW/600 MWh project is designed tosupply electricity to around 24,000 homes for four hours.

A major project for Arizona

Scheduled for completion in April 2026, the Justice Energy Storage project represents a crucial step in APS’s strategy to meet the region’s growing energy demand. APS, the state’s largest electricity supplier, is committed to integrating more clean energy into its grid to ensure a reliable and sustainable supply.
Strata Clean Energy, headquartered in Durham, North Carolina, with offices in Scottsdale and Denver, is well positioned to bring this project to fruition thanks to its experience and capabilities in development, engineering, construction and maintenance.

Partnerships and commitments

Last year, Strata had already signed a similar agreement with APS for the Scatter Wash project, a 255 MW/1 GWh battery storage complex currently under construction. These initiatives illustrate both organizations’ ongoing commitment to improving energy reliability while integrating more renewable energies.
Josh Rogol, President of Strata Clean Energy, emphasized the importance of this collaboration: “We believe APS will continue to be a leader in battery energy storage, and our broad portfolio of clean energy projects, along with our world-class execution capabilities, uniquely position us to help the region achieve its clean energy goals.”

Benefits for consumers

Brian Cole, Vice President of Resource Management at APS, also expressed his satisfaction with the initiative: “APS is planning thoughtfully to meet Arizona’s growing energy needs with a diverse mix of resources, ensuring a reliable, affordable and clean power supply. Projects like Justice Energy Storage will benefit customers during the hottest times of the day.”
Under the new agreement, APS will be able to charge and discharge the power system as required, while Strata will ensure the system’s capacity, reliability and efficiency throughout the contract period.

A sustainable energy future

In June 2023, APS launched a Request for Proposals (RFP) to secure approximately 1 GW of resources, including 700 MW of renewable energy, to meet the needs of its Integrated Resource Plan. The Justice Energy Storage project was one of the projects selected following this RFP.
