South Africa, facing a persistent energy crisis marked by frequent load shedding, has awarded two major energy storage projects with a capacity exceeding 300 MWh to AMEA Power. These projects were secured under the second phase of the Battery Energy Storage Independent Power Producers Procurement Programme (BESIPPPP), initiated by the Department of Electricity and Energy. This initiative aims to strengthen the national grid and support the country’s energy transition.

The Gainfar and Boitekong projects, located near the Ngwedi and Marang substations in the North West Province, respectively, will provide critical services to Eskom, the national operator, through 15-year Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs).

Strategic infrastructure for the grid

The projects will offer essential storage capacity to smooth out energy fluctuations from renewable sources and ensure a reliable power supply. The integration of these solutions is part of broader efforts to modernize the country’s energy infrastructure.

According to South Africa’s Department of Electricity and Energy, these installations will play a pivotal role in reducing service interruptions, stabilizing the grid, and enhancing national energy resilience.

An economic and political context

This initiative aligns with a broader strategy to attract foreign investments and strengthen collaboration between private and public entities. It also underscores the growing importance of storage technologies in the energy transition, a strategic issue for South Africa.

In parallel, AMEA Power continues to expand its presence in the country, notably with the 120 MW Doornhoek solar project, awarded during the sixth phase of the Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (REIPPPP). This project, currently under construction, exemplifies the opportunities in South Africa’s energy market.

Increased support for Eskom

With these new projects, AMEA Power positions itself as a key partner in modernizing South Africa’s energy infrastructure. The storage capacities provided will not only strengthen grid stability but also offer a viable solution to support the greater integration of renewable energy into the national energy mix.
