Shanghai Electric and Siemens formalised a cooperation agreement during the eighth edition of the China International Import Expo, focused on the development of smart power systems using medium- and low-voltage equipment. The agreement aims to accelerate technological innovation in China’s electrical infrastructure by leveraging both companies’ complementary strengths to improve grid reliability and efficiency.

An industrial energy-focused partnership

The collaboration is part of a longstanding relationship between Shanghai Electric and Siemens, built on decades of technical and industrial cooperation. The new agreement includes plans to upgrade power systems and deploy pilot projects for smart grid equipment. Both partners are committed to accelerating the adoption of integrated digital solutions in power infrastructure through high-value industrial projects.

Zhu Zhaokai, President of Shanghai Electric Group, welcomed this new stage in bilateral cooperation, stressing its strategic importance for the sector. He stated that the partnership would contribute to building smarter energy systems, responding to increasing demand for automation and reliability in power distribution networks.

Progress in infrastructure digitalisation

Siemens reiterated the importance of the Chinese market in the global energy transformation. The company reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Shanghai Electric in producing high-tech equipment and developing integrated solutions for a wide range of industrial applications. The agreement also aims to enhance both firms’ capacity to deliver benchmark projects that showcase Chinese technological innovation.

Previous phases of cooperation have consolidated their role in modernising the power grid. In April 2025, a strategic agreement was signed to advance electricity transmission and low-carbon initiatives. In July, a member of Siemens Energy’s executive board visited Shanghai to discuss energy technology integration across international markets.

Towards expansion of joint international projects

This new agreement could strengthen Shanghai Electric’s leadership in transmission and distribution equipment, while opening up opportunities for exporting technological solutions. Both companies aim to build on this momentum by exploring new integrated industrial applications, focusing on high-end technologies adapted to the needs of a rapidly evolving energy market.

The cooperation follows an international expansion strategy, with the ambition to develop benchmark projects that could serve as models in other regions. This reflects a joint intention to invest sustainably in the modernisation of electrical systems, while maintaining the industrial foundation of production.
