German conglomerate RWE has placed a USD 2 billion green bond in two tranches. The first tranche, of USD 1 billion, has a 10-year maturity with a yield to maturity of 5.926% and a coupon of 5.875%. The second, also worth a billion euros, has a 30-year maturity and a yield of 6.261%, with a coupon of 6.250%. The issue met with strong interest, with buy orders 3.8 times greater than the offer.

Market impact and investor demand

The order book reached 7.6 billion USD, a sign of the strong investor demand for this green bond. This issue marks RWE’s strategic entry into the US bond market, a significant step for the German company.

RWE’s sustainable financing strategy

RWE CFO Michael Müller underlines the company’s commitment to expanding sustainable financing. RWE plans to issue between 3.0 and 3.5 billion euros of securities per year until 2030, in euros and US dollars. The United States is RWE’s largest market outside Europe, with installed capacity more than doubling since 2020.

RWE’s growth and investment objectives

The funds will be used for the ‘Growing Green’ investment program. RWE plans to invest 55 billion euros by 2030 in renewable energies, batteries, flexible generation and hydrogen projects, aiming to increase its green portfolio to over 65 gigawatts by the end of the decade.

Contributing to the energy transition

With this green loan, RWE is making a significant contribution to the energy transition and the decarbonization of the energy system. The company has already invested 20 billion euros between 2021 and 2023 and is continuing its efforts to strengthen its leading position in renewable energies in the United States.

RWE’s successful green bond issue demonstrates investor confidence and reinforces the company’s initiatives for sustainable growth in the renewable energies sector.
