Neurath and Hamm, Germany will host a 220MW battery storage project at power plant sites.
A local project
Neurath and Hamm in North Rhine-Westphalia will house a total of 690 lithium-ion battery packs. The total investment amounts to approximately €140 million. Construction is expected to begin in 2023, with a planned start-up date of 2024.
This new battery storage system helps to effectively stabilize the grid with a reliable power supply. The battery is virtually networked with RWE’s German power plants. An innovation that allows a perfect management of the unit that supplies the balancing energy in an efficient way.
A decision for the future
Roger Miesen, CEO of RWE Generation, states:
“This investment decision paves the way for a forward-looking project that will set new standards in terms of size as well as smart networking. Our new battery storage system will optimize the use of our German power plant fleet and, in tandem, they will provide balancing power.”
In Neurath, an area of about 7000 square meters will house batteries with a total capacity of 80MW. In Hamm, the 14,000 square meter area will house batteries with a total capacity of 140MW.
RWE currently operates a total installed battery storage capacity of approximately 150MW. The company is deploying over 800MW/1800MWh of battery storage projects worldwide. In addition, the company aims to build 3GW of batteries by 2030.
