Neoenergia inaugurates 86 km of power lines strengthening Brazilian grid

The Brazilian energy group Neoenergia has completed the installation of two power transmission lines in the state of Santa Catarina, aiming to enhance the reliability of the national grid, benefiting several key regional cities.

Neoenergia, a leading player in Brazil’s energy sector, recently announced the completion of construction and the initiation of operational tests for two new electricity transmission lines located in the state of Santa Catarina. This project is part of the broader programme named Vale do Itajaí, designed to significantly enhance the robustness and availability of the National Interconnected System (Sistema Interligado Nacional – SIN) in this strategic area.

Project scope and expected benefits

This newly operational segment covers 86 kilometres of high-voltage transmission lines supported by 218 transmission towers, as well as three major substations. Among these installations are the new substations at Joinville Sul, Jaraguá do Sul, and Itajaí 2. Significant expansions are also planned at existing sites, including Areia, Itajaí, and Biguaçu.

The urban centres of Itajaí, Joinville, Jaraguá do Sul, and Indaial will be the main beneficiaries of this infrastructure upgrade, primarily aiming to guarantee a more reliable and stable electricity supply to a region experiencing sustained economic growth. These works represent a substantial effort within a broader strategy aimed at reinforcing the national electrical grid, essential for supporting industrial and urban dynamism.

Strategic planning and national scope

Currently, Neoenergia operates in the electricity transmission sector across 15 Brazilian states, with a total of 4,774 km of operational transmission lines and a transformation capacity reaching 6,520 megavolt amperes (MVA). The company plans to extend this figure to 8,254 km by the end of 2025, representing an additional 3,480 km of expansion. Simultaneously, the total transformation capacity of its substations is expected to reach approximately 9,536 MVA.

Fabiano Uchoas Ribeiro, Chief Executive Officer of Operations and Projects at Neoenergia, stated in an official statement that this initiative constitutes “a significant achievement, stimulating regional socioeconomic development while consolidating the national energy system.” According to Mr Ribeiro, the company continues its expansion efforts to significantly improve transmission infrastructure nationwide, resulting in direct positive impacts for the local population.

Strategic stakes for regional markets

This electricity transmission project is part of a strategic approach aimed at optimizing electricity distribution and preventing potential power outages in economically active regions. The newly inaugurated infrastructure addresses rising industrial and domestic demands, underscoring the strategic importance of investment in the energy grid to maintain the competitiveness of the affected urban areas.
