Neoen is supplying TVO, the nuclear operator, with a Yllikkälä Power Reserve battery to ensure the stability of the Finnish electricity network.

The stability of the network

Neoen contributes to the stability of the electricity grid with a battery located in Lappeenranta in south-eastern Finland. With a capacity of 30MW, it contributes to the protection system designed by TVO and Fingrid, the Finnish transmission system operator. In addition, TVO is currently commissioning the Olkiluoto 3 EPR.

Neoen’s battery in Finland will be useful in case of a production interruption of the Olkiluoto 3 EPR. While the nuclear reactor is experiencing delays, it has a capacity of 1.6GW, the most powerful reactor in Europe. Its contribution will significantly benefit Finland’s energy independence as well as its decarbonization objectives.

The objective of this provision of fast reserve services by Neoen is to compensate for an interruption of the electricity production of Olkiluoto 3. TVO’s system provides that in the event of an interruption, the capacity of the Yllikkälä Power Reserve battery is discharged into the Finnish power grid. This will be done within 200 milliseconds.

Storage expertise

Neoen increases its presence in Finland with this fast reserve service. The company has had a presence in Finalnde since 2018. Its projects, in operation or under construction, represent a total capacity of 550MW in the country.

In particular, the company operates the Mutkalampi wind farm, with a capacity of 404MW, which represents about 2% of the national electricity consumption. Neoen’s Yllikkälä Power Reserve battery has been operational since October 2020. It is one of the largest batteries in the Nordic countries.

In particular, it contributes to the balancing of the Finnish grid, thanks to its storage capacities. At the international level, Neoen is one of the most active players in storage. The company has a portfolio of over 640MW of batteries in operation and under construction.
