Nel ASA has secured a 135 million euro grant from the European Innovation Fund to support the industrialization of its pressurized alkaline electrolyzer technology. This technology, currently in the prototyping phase, will be implemented at Herøya, Norway, where the company already operates industrial facilities.
Details of the Grant
The grant provided by the European Innovation Fund will fund the phased deployment of this new technology. The first phase aims for an annual production capacity of 1 to 2 GW at Nel’s existing facilities in Herøya. Enova SF, the Norwegian contact point for the European Fund, supported this funding request.
Technology in Development
Nel has spent over five years developing this new pressurized alkaline electrolyzer technology, aiming to improve the performance of green hydrogen production while reducing costs. The technology is still in the prototype stage, with promising results. The launch of industrial production will depend on the results of prototype testing and market validation.
Production Plan
Nel plans to expand production capacity to 4 GW if the prototype tests are successful and if market demand is sufficient. The project will leverage the optimization of the existing facilities at Herøya. The company has also benefited from financial support from the Norwegian Research Council and Innovation Norway during earlier development stages.
