Lhyfe has received a grant of SEK 125.6 million (approx. 11 million euros) from Klimatklivet, a funding program supported by the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency. The grant will be used to build a renewablehydrogen production plant in Trelleborg, a major transport hub with Scandinavia’s largest roll-on roll-off port. The Trelleborg region is strategic for transport and logistics in Sweden. The plant is being built in response to the growing demand for green hydrogen to supply the refuelling stations currently under construction, which are essential to the development of a sustainable mobility network. The Lhyfe plant, with an electrolysis capacity of 10 MW, is expected to produce up to 4 tonnes of green hydrogen per day by 2027.
Financing and Deployment
The subsidy will cover around 40% of the total investment required for design, equipment procurement and construction. Lhyfe stands out for its ability to produce renewable hydrogen via water electrolysis, powered by renewable energies. Its first production site in Bouin, Pays de la Loire, France, has been operational since 2021, and two other sites were inaugurated in Occitanie and Brittany in December 2023. The company currently has five more sites under construction and has launched its first green hydrogen trading platform. With 195 employees and projects in 12 countries, Lhyfe has a pipeline of projects totaling around 10 GW in Europe. This expansion reflects Lhyfe’s commitment to supplying green hydrogen on a large scale, contributing to the decarbonization of the industrial and transport sectors.
Challenges and opportunities
Completion of the project at Trelleborg will depend on obtaining operating and construction permits, as well as financial investment decisions. Sara Wihlborg, Lhyfe’s Country Manager for Sweden, is delighted with this first grant in Sweden, underlining the importance of this project for the development of a hydrogen infrastructure based on renewable energies. Lhyfe is committed to supporting Sweden’s energy agenda by helping to supply green hydrogen to the mobility sector in southern Sweden. The project aims to increase the penetration of green hydrogen across the country, for both mobility and industry, responding to growing demand for sustainable energy solutions. Lhyfe’s project in Trelleborg represents a significant step towards the creation of a green hydrogen network in Sweden, supporting the country’s decarbonization efforts. The grant from Klimatklivet strengthens Lhyfe’s position as a leader in renewable hydrogen in Europe, while underlining the importance of green hydrogen for a sustainable energy future.
