Moldova declared a state of emergency in the energy sector for 60 days starting Wednesday. The Moldovan Parliament approved the measure during an extraordinary government meeting. Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu urged the population to "avoid any unnecessary energy consumption, particularly during peak hours" and to "remain united." The former Soviet republic imports most of its electricity from Romania via a line running through southern Ukraine.
Critical Infrastructure Damaged by Drone Strikes
According to Moldovan authorities, drones crashed near this power line in Ukraine. "Demining operations" are required before repairs can begin, with no timeline given. The Issacea-Vulcanesti line had already been struck in late January, when disruptions to Ukraine's power grid caused blackouts in Chisinau and other cities for several hours. Traffic and border crossings had to be managed manually during that incident.
"Overnight strikes disconnected a key energy supply line from Europe. Alternative lines are available but the situation remains precarious. Russia bears sole responsibility," President Maia Sandu said on X. The government stated on Telegram that these alternative lines use interconnections between Romania and Moldova.
Import Dependency at the Heart of Energy Concerns
Moldova's Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned "actions undermining regional energy security and endangering essential civilian infrastructure." Moldova produces some of its own electricity but remains dependent on imports, primarily from Romania. Energy supply security remains a central challenge for European economies, as illustrated by the role of natural gas in electricity price formation across Europe.
