In Italy, floating offshore wind energy is being accelerated. GreenIT, the Italian renewable energy joint venture between Plenitude (Eni) and CDP Equity (CDP Group), and Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) via its flagship funds have signed an agreement to develop three floating offshore wind projects in Lazio and Sardinia. The plants will be located on average about 30 km from the coast and will have an overall capacity of about 2 GW.

Floating offshore wind turbines in Italy

The agreement concerns a project in Lazio (540 MW) and two other wind farms off Olbia (500 MW and 1,000 MW). The three projects will produce approximately 5 TWh/year and will operate between 2028 and 2031.

Ambitious decarbonization objectives

In addition, the partnership will have a 3 GW offshore wind portfolio in Italy. The production will be 7 TWh/year and sufficient to supply 2.5 million homes. It will contribute to the decarbonization goals of the National Integrated Energy and Climate 2030 Plan.

Floating foundations to minimize environmental impact in Italy

These projects will use floating foundations and innovative technical solutions to minimize their environmental and visual impact. The partnership will also benefit from technological and logistical synergies with other offshore wind initiatives managed by the same partners.

Several companies collaborate on floating offshore wind energy

A joint team will develop the wind farms with Copenhagen Offshore Partners. Two other Italian companies, NiceTechnology and 7 Seas Wind Power, have also worked with GreenIT and CIP on other offshore wind projects.

This agreement represents a further strategic step to strengthen the floating offshore wind industry in Italy. This commitment aims for a low-carbon future and encourages the local supply chain. In addition, this initiative creates jobs, stimulates the economy and meets energy needs.
