In Galatini, Greece, Iberdrola has just commissioned the Askio III onshore wind farm after 6 months of construction.
A complex geography
In Galatini, the wind farm has 12 installations with blades of 70 meters long each. Their capacity amounts to 50MW. They will be able to supply more than 54,000 homes with electricity each year.
In addition, their commissioning required the deployment of 30 kilometers of cable between internal medium-voltage circuits and an evacuation line. This construction has led to the expansion of the Lygeri substation. In Galatini, the completion of Askio III in just 6 months is quite spectacular considering the geographical location of the plant.
The region of Western Macedonia is indeed very mountainous with an altitude of 1500 meters above sea level. Completion of the project before the onset of winter is timely as snow accumulation would have delayed the project. The team was able to complete the civil works, transport and assembly of the wind turbines simultaneously.
With an average of 75 workers on site, the project will have employed up to 150 people, most of them local. The transport of the blades used the Blade Lifter technology, allowing to reduce the environmental impact. Indeed, its articulated platform allows the blades to be rotated and tilted in order to make them progress in spite of the obstacles present in the mountain.
A recognized company
Thus, no new roads were required for the Askio III project in Galatini. In particular, the facility will be connected to the grid connection point with its predecessor, the Askio II wind farm. Its need for storage space will be minimized thanks to a smaller platform area.
With this new wind farm in Galatini, Greece, the Iberdrola Group is expanding its installed capacity to 365MW in the country. It is currently building a third project, the 18MW Rokani project. In addition, it is also located in Greece, near Athens.
Iberdrola has an international reach with 39,000 MW of installed renewable capacity worldwide. Its commitment to the energy transition goes back some twenty years. The company is specialized in wind energy.
Iberdrola continues to build on this momentum and announces a global investment of €17 billion in renewable energy by 2025. 24% of its future projects will be deployed in the European Union. Finally, the company will allocate more than €4.2 billion to onshore wind projects.
