In Canada, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police announced the arrest of an employee of Hydro-Québec’s Centre of Excellence in Electrification.
An arrest
In Canada, the alleged spy would have obtained industrial secrets with the intention of sharing them with a foreign power. He was a researcher at Hydro-Québec’s Centre of Excellence in Transportation Electrification and Energy Storage (CETEES). Indeed, he was working on battery materials.
Hydro-Quebec’s safety team in Canada was taking the first steps in the investigation. Investigators would then share the information with the appropriate agencies due to the magnitude of the issues at stake. However, the suspect did not have access to information related to Hydro-Québec’s main mission.
Corporate Vigilance
All of the suspect’s authorizations in Canada were subject to revocation. Hydro-Quebec authorities terminated his employment for serious violations of the company’s code of ethics. Dominic Roy, Senior Director responsible for corporate security at Hydro-Québec, says:
“Our detection and response mechanisms enabled our investigators to bring this matter to the attention of the RCMP, with whom we have been working closely ever since. No organization is immune to a situation like this, which is why we must always remain vigilant and transparent, and we must not tolerate violations of the company’s code of ethics.”
CETEES is dedicated to research and development in the field of battery materials. It develops advanced technologies for electric vehicles. In addition, it anticipates the energy storage systems of tomorrow.
