Framatome has announced the launch of a pilot line dedicated to the production of tri-structural isotropic (TRISO) nuclear fuel at its Romans-sur-Isère site, located in the Drôme department. This development marks a key step in the group’s strategy to strengthen its industrial capacity in France in the field of next-generation nuclear reactors.

A fuel designed for advanced reactors

TRISO fuel is made from spherical kernels of enriched uranium oxycarbide or uranium dioxide, encapsulated in successive layers of carbon and silicon carbide. This structure provides high-temperature stability, making it a preferred option for high-temperature reactors (HTRs) under development. The French pilot line will allow the production of this type of fuel enriched up to 20%, with the goal of industrial qualification.

The facility will benefit from Framatome’s long-standing expertise in nuclear fuel. The project also includes advanced quality control and customised manufacturing processes, paving the way for potential scale-up of TRISO fuel production in France.

Strategic cooperation with Blue Capsule

As part of France’s 2030 programme for innovative nuclear reactors, Framatome has signed a cooperation agreement with French start-up Blue Capsule Technology. The partnership aims to qualify TRISO fuel and produce specific fuel elements for its future HTR reactor. Blue Capsule plans to use low-enriched fuel of less than 5%, aligning with international standards for low-enriched uranium (LEU), while targeting export markets.

The reactor developed by Blue Capsule is designed to supply industrial-grade heat and steam, as well as electricity if needed. The model is primarily aimed at energy-intensive sectors. The company believes that establishing a robust supply chain in Europe is essential for the successful deployment of this technology.

Joint expansion strategy with the United States

In parallel, Framatome continues to expand internationally through a joint venture formed with Standard Nuclear, an independent US-based company specialised in TRISO fuel. This joint entity, named Standard Nuclear-Framatome (SNF), plans to produce two tonnes of TRISO fuel per year starting in 2027, pending regulatory approval. The initiative aims to meet growing demand from advanced reactor projects in the United States and beyond.

With over six decades of experience in nuclear fuel manufacturing, Framatome intends to develop an offer tailored to the evolving needs of industrial partners, leveraging its facilities in both France and North America. This positioning targets a growing share of the emerging market for small modular reactors and high-temperature reactors.
