EverWind Fuels Company has received major environmental approval for its initial phase of green hydrogen and green ammonia production in Point Tupper, Nova Scotia. The $6 billion, 1 million tonne per year project is a partnership with Membertou, Paqtnkek and Potlotek First Nations.

Green ammonia to be delivered to German buyers by 2025

The approval was issued by the Minister of Environment and Climate Change, Government of Nova Scotia, and marks a critical step for EverWind in its path to delivering green ammonia to German buyers E.ON and Uniper by 2025. The green hydrogen and ammonia project is the first of its kind in North America to receive environmental approval and is among the first in the world.

Point Tupper site, North America’s hydrogen hub

EverWind was the successful developer in December 2022 for a 2 GW onshore wind farm on 137,000 acres of land. This onshore wind will power the second phase of its green hydrogen production facility by 2026. EverWind’s operational Point Tupper Marine Terminal, with the capacity to produce more than 10 million tons of green ammonia per year, is an ideal location for the project due to its existing $1 billion in storage and logistics assets, as well as its access to key infrastructure, such as rail, roads and pipelines.

EverWind’s CEO and founder, Trent Vichie, welcomed the news, noting the importance of the project to the creation of a clean energy industry in Canada and Nova Scotia. Invest in Canada CEO Laurel Broten also recognized the importance of the announcement for the hydrogen sector in the energy transition to net zero emissions by 2050.

Recognition of Mi’kmaq Unceded Aboriginal Territory

EverWind recognizes the ancestral territory of the Mi’kmaq people and considers them the past, present and future custodians of the region. The project will work closely with First Nations to ensure that the development respects community values and traditions.

In conclusion, the environmental approval for the EverWind Fuels project marks a major milestone in the transition to cleaner, more sustainable energy in Canada and around the world. The project will make a significant contribution to the creation of a competitive green hydrogen industry and to the achievement of the objectives.
