EDPR NA Distributed Generation (EDPR NA DG), the distributed solar subsidiary of EDPR Renewables North America, is actively pursuing its growth strategy in the community solar sector. The company has just announced the acquisition, from developer Renewable Properties, of a portfolio of four community solar projects under development in Illinois, representing a total capacity of 20 megawatt-peak (MWac).

Contributing to Illinois’ energy goals

This new acquisition is part of EDPR NA DG’s commitment to bringing clean, reliable and sustainable energy solutions to Illinois communities. Once operational, these projects are expected to generate around 42 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of solar electricity per year, enough to power more than 5,000 homes in the state. They reinforce the extensive portfolio of solar power plants developed by EDPR NA DG, contributing to Illinois’ ambitious renewable energy targets of 40% of its energy mix from renewable sources by 2030 and 50% by 2040.

A fruitful partnership with Renewable Properties

To complete this transaction, EDPR NA DG has teamed up with Renewable Properties, a major player in the development of community solar projects based in San Francisco. With a pipeline of over 1 gigawatt of solar, energy storage and electric vehicle charging infrastructure projects spread across 15 US states, Renewable Properties has solid expertise in this field. According to founder and president Aaron Halimi, this portfolio represents just the beginning of their efforts to deploy reliable community solar solutions in Illinois.

Strategic investments for the future of energy

This acquisition complements EDPR NA’s other strategic investments in Illinois. In August 2023, the Group inaugurated its technical training center in Bloomington, aiming to train around 100 solar and wind power technicians each year who will be deployed at the Group’s operational assets across the United States, including Illinois. An initiative that testifies to EDPR NA’s commitment to developing local skills and promoting education in the field of renewable energies.
EDPR NA and its subsidiary EDPR NA DG are thus steadily strengthening their presence in distributed and community solar power, two key segments for accelerating the energy transition in the United States and meeting the ambitious targets set by various states, such as Illinois. Thanks to strategic partnerships such as the one with Renewable Properties, and targeted investment in training, the Group is firmly positioned in this fast-growing market.
